A tradition that unites us
The Foundation of the Club
The history of the Georgian Pointer-Setter Club began on February 16, 2011, when Sergey Shaginov, Alexander Nukradze, Giorgi Andronikashvili, Shalva Shavgulidze, Levan Akhmeteli, and Giorgi Kukhaleishvili took the initiative to establish the Georgian Pointer Club.
The foundation of the new club was inspired by the emergence of a new European approach to cynology—one that differed radically from the traditional Soviet methods. International judge Sergey Shaginov played a particularly important role in introducing and promoting this new vision.
In the same year, the Georgian Pointer Club gained international recognition and became a member of the Georgian Cynological Federation, which is itself affiliated with the international cynological organization.
The First International Field Trial
In 2014, the club organized its first international CACIT-level field trial.
The event soon became a tradition, and in the following years, a number of leading international judges and professional trainers were invited to Georgia to officiate at field trials and share their knowledge and experience.
This expertise was passed on both through dedicated seminars and directly during the field competitions.
During the same period, European-bred pointing dogs were introduced to Georgia. These dogs differed significantly from the local population in terms of genetics and working qualities.
International Recognition and Development
In 2018, the club became a member of the International Pointer Club.
As interest among enthusiasts of other British pointing breeds continued to grow, the club changed its name in 2020 and became the Georgian Pointer-Setter Club.
A New Generation and International Success
It is also important to note that a younger generation soon joined the club, including Davit Samushia, Giga Megutnishvili, and Giorgi Arabuli. Through their efforts, Georgia gained recognition on the international stage.
A dog born in Georgia—Giorgi Arabuli’s “Tsinandali’s Ca”—became the 2024 European Champion in Grande Cerca, an outstanding achievement not only for the club but for Georgian hunting dog culture as a whole.
Davit Samushia is an international judge and Vice-President of the International Pointer Club. The Georgian Pointer-Setter Club’s membership in the International Pointer Club, as well as its dignified representation on the international stage, are largely the result of his tireless work and dedication.
Giga Megutnishvili’s “Tsinandali” kennel also deserves special recognition. The future European Champion, along with many other high-level dogs, was born and bred at this kennel.
The Club Today
Every year, the club organizes field trials on both quail and woodcock, while dog shows are also held periodically.
The club’s history continues, and we believe that through unity, shared effort, and our love for Georgian hunting dog culture, we will achieve even greater success in the future.
